Next-gen Nissan leaf could have 400km range

Nissan has reportedly developed a lighter and higher capacity battery that promises to double the range of the Leaf to around 400km.Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said in a Tokyo Business News Channel interview that the company is putting final touches on batteries that will double the range of its Leaf EV. The clip isn’t available online for validation though.

Nissan’s chief spokesperson Jeff Kuhlman was quizzed about the claim to which Jeff didn’t confirm or deny. Kuhlman said that at Nissan, “we continue our R&D efforts because we believe that we can do more with battery electric, and very soon take the issue of range off of the table. In other words, cars with a comparable range to today’s petrol vehicles.” Further, an engineering source is quoted saying, “Commercial applications could be no more than one model cycle away,” on these 400km range batteries.
No further details on the technology and innovation done to expand this range are given at the moment. But with range anxiety off the table and cost of the technology coming down, is it finally the time for electric vehicles to become mainstream options? Only time will tell. We know the answers will best be found with Nissan’s next generation leaf.
